Loop type

Vertical loops

Vertical loops are narrow bores drilled straight down beside the house, each holding a U of pipe grouted in place.

When it fits

  • The lot is small, steep or mostly lawn you want to keep

  • You heat with propane or oil and want to stop

  • There is room on one side of the house for a drill rig

  • The house has ducts or floor tubing a heat pump can use

The site visit

When we come out to the lot.

  1. 01

Step 1: We walk the lot

We look at the mechanical room, the yard, the well and septic, and where a rig could reach.

  2. 02

Step 2: We listen to the house

We ask which rooms run cold, how the house is used and what you heat with now.

  3. 03

Step 3: We measure what we need

Rooms, windows, insulation, duct sizes and the electrical panel, for the heat loss calculation.

  4. 04

Step 4: You get a written quote

It lists the loop, the heat pump, the distribution, the permits and the restoration as separate lines, and says how long it holds.

The number

What sets your number.

No prices here. These are the things that move the quote, and your written quote shows each as its own line.

  • Number and depth of bores

From the heat loss and the soil. More heat or poorer soil means more total bore length.

  • Soil, rock and groundwater

What the drill finds decides the time on site and the grout.

  • Rig access

A steep drive, a septic field or overhead lines change where we can drill.

  • The heat pump and distribution

One-stage or variable speed, ducts or tubing, new or reused.

  • Permits and inspections

Township and county rules differ. Each permit is a line on the quote.

  • Restoration

What we regrade and what you reseed.

Questions about this loop.

How much yard does a loop need?

It depends on the loop. A vertical loop goes down, so a few bores can fit beside a house. A horizontal field needs open ground, often a good part of an acre. A lake loop needs no yard at all, only the right water. We size the field from your house's heat loss and say what it needs before you decide.

Who does the drilling?

A separate drilling firm, Fischer Drilling, bores the field for us. Your quote names who is responsible for what, from the bores to the restored lawn.

What parts wear out?

The buried pipe is heat-fused polyethylene with no moving parts underground. The heat pump indoors is the part that wears, and it can be replaced without touching the loop.
