Loop type

Lake and pond loops

A lake loop is a set of pipe coils sunk on the bottom of deep enough water and piped back to the heat pump on shore.

When it fits

  • Your lot reaches deep, still water you own or can use

  • There is little yard to drill or trench

  • The shore is easy to cross with pipe

  • You want the least disturbance to the lawn

The site visit

When we come out to the lot.

  1. 01

Step 1: We walk the lot

We look at the mechanical room, the yard, the well and septic, and where a rig could reach.

  2. 02

Step 2: We listen to the house

We ask which rooms run cold, how the house is used and what you heat with now.

  3. 03

Step 3: We measure what we need

Rooms, windows, insulation, duct sizes and the electrical panel, for the heat loss calculation.

  4. 04

Step 4: You get a written quote

It lists the loop, the heat pump, the distribution, the permits and the restoration as separate lines, and says how long it holds.

The number

What sets your number.

No prices here. These are the things that move the quote, and your written quote shows each as its own line.

  • Depth and size of the water

A shallow cove can't carry the load. We measure before we promise.

  • Who owns the bottom

Lakebed rights and shoreline rules can decide the whole project.

  • State and local permits

Work in or near water has its own permits, listed on the quote.

  • Pipe run to the house

Length, depth and how it crosses the shore.

  • Ice and boat traffic

Coils stay clear of docks, anchors and ice movement.

  • The heat pump

Sized to the house, not to the lake.

Questions about this loop.

Do I need a pond or a lake?

No. Most loops are in the ground. A lake or pond loop is one option when the water is deep and large enough, and when the owner of the lakebed and the state allow it.

Does a loop need permits?

Often. Drilling, buried pipe, electrical and mechanical work can each need one, depending on the township and county. We file them and list them on your quote.

What is in the loop?

Water mixed with an antifreeze, usually propylene glycol or an alcohol. Your quote names which one and the mix.
